What’s New At Carenbauers

We are proud to announce several new craft beers coming to the Friendly City and beyond (all of Ohio and Marshall counties, to be exact). These beers offer unique takes on the West Coast IPA style, which dominates the microbrew market these days. This hop-heavy recipe happens to have a fascinating history dating back to the purchase of San Francisco’s Anchor Brewing in 1965 by Fritz Maytag (of the Maytag appliance family). In the decades that followed, the uniquely American style developed along with customer’s taste buds, which at first didn’t appreciate the bitter flavors of the new hop varieties being used. First We Feast has an excellent article about it, How the West Coast-Style IPA Conquered the World.

The first brews on the list of local newcomers are Space Dust IPA and Immortal IPA out of Washington State’s Elysian Brewing Company. Elysian opened in 1995 and operates 4 restaurants and pubs, all located in Seattle.

Space Dust IPA – The hopping is pure starglow energy, with Chinook to bitter and late and dry additions of Citra and Amarillo. ABV: 8.2% IBU: 73 AVAILABILITY: Year-Round.

Immortal IPA – A Northwest interpretation of a classic English style, golden copper in color and loaded with New World hop flavor and aroma. Extremely drinkable. ABV: 6.3% IBU: 62 AVAILABILITY: Year-Round.

Split Shot Espresso Milk Stout – Split Shot combines the local talents of Elysian Brewing and Stumptown Coffee in a deliciously smooth, very Northwest beer. ABV: 6.0% IBU: 28 AVAILABILITY: Seasonal.

The next beer comes from 10 Barrel Brewing Company out of Bend, Oregon. 10 Barrel started back in 2006 with three guys and one idea: Brew Beer. Drink Beer. Have Fun Doing It.

Joe IPA – Bright citrusy flavor, intense hoppy aroma. Simcoe, Amarillo, and Mosaic hops. ABV: 6.9% IBU: 70 AVAILABILITY: Year-Round.

Rounding out the third west coast brewery is Golden Road Brewing right out of Downtown LA. The youngest of the three mentioned, Golden Road opened in 2011.

Wolf Pup Session IPA – Hoppy and refreshing, Wolf Pup is a riff on a Session IPA. Highly drinkable with a wildly aromatic tropical and citrus character, it’s the perfect companion to keep on sippin’ for these long winter days. ABV: 4.5% IBU: 50 AVAILABILITY: Year-Round.

As great as all this sounds, there’s more! We are also bringing back Green Flash. We will have both West Coast IPA and Soul Style IPA. Here are a few other new additions, but these breweries come from the east coast.

Blue Point Brewing – located in Patchogue, New York is the largest craft brewery on Long Island. Blue Point opened in 1998 and in 2006 their flagship Toasted Lager won a gold medal at the World Beer Cup in the American-Style Amber Lager category.

Toasted Lager – Their flagship and most popular brew, Toasted Lager is the best American Amber Lager you’ll ever taste. To back up that claim, they use six different grains to perfect a balanced flavor of malt and hops, and a special proprietary lager yeast to give Toasted Lager an exceptional, long-lasting smooth finish that’s meant to be enjoyed year-round. Pairs perfectly with fresh seafood…or any food for that matter. ABV: 5.5% AVAILABILTY: Year-Round.

Hoptical Illusion IPA – What you’re seeing is a hop lover’s dream. To brew this award-winning well balanced IPA, they add plenty of hops five different ways. Adding it five ways allows the “Essence of the Hop” to really shine through and give Hoptical Illusion its signature resiny, citrus-burst punch. From aroma to first sip, this beer is sure to be one of your new favorites. ABV: 7.0% IBU: 70 AVAILABILITY: Year-Round.

Blueberry Ale – Crisp golden ale with just a hint of blueberry flavor. Not your typical fruit-forward beer, Blueberry Ale unleashes a lively berry aroma that gives way to a well-balanced session ale that is refreshing year-round. “…On those rare occasions though, you will find the Holy Grail of fruit beers, a balanced blend of enjoyable yet discerning flavors. Fortunately for both Blue Point and its fans, the Blueberry Ale always falls under this latter category.”  – Paste Magazine. ABV: 4.5% IBU 19 AVAILABILITY: Year-Round.

Evolution Craft Brewing Company out of Salisbury, Maryland. If you’ve been to Ocean City, chances are you’ve had an Evolution brew. Their story starts as a tale of two brothers, Tom with his passion for craft beer, and John with his passion for food. But it goes well beyond that. It involves you and your friends. Backyard barbecues and amazing meals. And beers you won’t ever want to forget. Their top-rated beers are perfectly crafted to complement great food. Whether it’s the food they serve at their restaurants or the foods you make at home. It’s the constant evolution to create the perfect pairings for you to enjoy. Ever-better beer for ever-better food. An excellent recipe for ever-better times.

Lot Nº 3 IPA – This American-style IPA is aggressively hopped at a rate of over 2 lb. per barrel. Big notes of citrus and pine complement a reserved but firm malt backbone. Pairs well with Indian food, jerk, Cajun, burgers and spicy seafood. ABV: 6.8% IBU: 65 AVAILABILITY: Year-Round.

Lot Nº 6 Double IPA – Think of this as their Lot No. 3 on performance-enhancing malt and hops. This beer is loaded with tropical fruit and citrus notes. Deep gold in color, massive additions of American varietal hops generate assertive bitterness and big hop flavor and aroma. Pairs well with Thai, mac and cheese, spicy, Mexican, salty and fried. ABV: 8.5% IBU 75 AVAILABILITY: Year-Round.

Pine’HOP’le IPA – A tropical take on the classic American IPA, their pineapple IPA packs a tropical fruit flavor with juicy hop character. Brewed with loads of pineapple juice and aggressively hopped to contribute big tropical and citrus notes. Pairs well with Indian, Cajun, Thai, Jerk, Caribbean, cheeseburgers, sliders, pizza and pretty much anything off the grill. ABV: 6.8 IBU: 65 AVAILABILITY: Year-Round.
